The mortality rates for the most common infectious diseases dropped substantially BEFORE the vaccines were even licensed. Many of them never even had vaccines: for example Scarlet Fever, Typhoid (general population), Dysentery, Tuberculosis, Syphilis never had vaccines. But these infectious disease also went away.

Nutrition is important. Sewage and sanitation systems are important. The same people who will tell you that you don't remember polio, or measles, are the same people who don't realize not everyone had toilets and running water, and that household refrigerators weren't standard until the 1940s.
